Counselling and support for better mental health and improved wellbeing

About Liz Pycroft

My name is Liz, I am a Registered and Accredited member of the BACP and I have a global practise providing mental health support to individuals and groups in the way that is most convenient to them.

I provide online counselling and therapy to anyone looking for support through a challenging time in life and who may be experiencing stress, anxiety, depression or any of the effects of change, grief, loss and upheaval.

I am highly empathic to people experiencing transitions or major life changes; or who have to make difficult choices or decisions for themselves or their families.

I've spent the last 30 years living and working between the UK, South Africa, Nigeria, Thailand, DRCongo, Sudan and am now based in Kenya.

In these years abroad I've worked with Humanitarians, Diplomats, UN staff, Aid Workers and International Development Organisations so I have a good understanding of the challenges this transient way of life presents for the individual and their partners and families. I understand that transitioning between places and adjusting to living in a new country and culture can be made easier if you have someone to talk to; someone who will listen and who can help you navigate through some of the feelings and thoughts associated with relocation.

My approach

I take an Integrative approach to counselling, which means that although my core training is Humanistic, I integrate other perspectives and techniques in order to meet the needs of my clients. My perspective is that a good relationship between the therapist and the client is at the heart of good counselling and that this relationship can nurture insight, growth and change.

I aim to provide a safe, accepting and confidential space where you can focus on discussing experiences and emotions that are of concern to you. The purpose of counselling is for you to gain awareness of the possibilities for making meaningful changes to your life and to examine the choices that are available to you.

Counselling is a collaborative process and we will work closely together on the issues you bring, to enable you to find the best course of action for you. I will not tell you what to do or give you advice, but at times will encourage you to challenge yourself and your previously held thoughts and beliefs.

Humanitarians & rights defenders

I have a specialism in providing individual counselling for humanitarian and development professionals; human rights activists and people working in fragile environments. Living and working in developing counties has made me very aware of the effects of stress on front line staff in these sectors. I have undertaken research and written about the mental health effects of humanitarian work. I am a trained EMDR therapist and have developed skills and expertise in working with trauma and vicarious trauma which may be the result of working in theses sectors.

I have educated and supported trainee counsellors, trained trauma therapists and provided training, facilitation and organisational support in the sector. This support includes PFA support for individuals & groups following a critical incident, training on the effects of stress and vicarious trauma; group facilitation and Psychological First Aid. My organisational clients have included UNICEF, UNHCR, IOM, UNOPS, UN Embassies, International Schools and INGOs.

I am an Associate with:

Individual Counselling

Living in a different culture or community can be wonderful and exciting; but it can also create anxiety, fear of difference, isolation, and depression. It can be useful to talk to a professional who understands the transient, international, expatriate experience.

Working in conflict affected and fragile States can be highly rewarding but may also create many challenges and stresses. At times working with vulnerable groups and difficult situations may feel overwhelming and it can be helpful to talk to someone who has lived and worked in similar contexts for many years and understands the challenges you face. Often people find it helpful to talk about the impact that their humanitarian or international work has had on them and on their families.

I provide support to anyone who is experiencing depression, anxiety, stress, burn - out or is just looking for a place to talk about their individual concerns; no matter where you live or work.

Remote & Online Counselling

Online counselling can be an opportunity to reflect on and explore experiences, thoughts and feelings in your own time and space. I use online video calls (mostly Zoom) as well as email and WhatsApp to provide support when other support may not be easily accessible.

I have provided remote support to people working in the deep field and in isolated locations, as well as in any place which is convenient for them.

In order to maintain your well-being and to prevent burnout; in order to remain resilient to the effects of the work you do; it is important to develop good self care strategies. A key factor in personal resilience is being able to recognize when you need support and being prepared to seek it out.

Accessing support in this way is for anyone who feel the effects of their work and lifestyle, not just for those experiencing trauma or crisis. Zoom and email Counselling is available to anyone who wishes to access support remotely, whatever their reason. Find out more by getting in touch.

Training

Training interventions can help build resilience and aim to address the effects of personal, organizational and situational indicators of stress which, individually or in combination, may have a negative impact on organizational performance and individual well-being.

Trainings focus on the effects of Trauma or a critical incident, Vicarious Trauma and on promoting Self Care and Personal Resilience.

Personal Resilience sessions are designed to help staff identify personal stress factors and common work related stressors, and how to identify the personal strategies one can put in place in order to mitigate the effects of work related stress.

The outcomes of these session are improved awareness of the effects of stress; improved skills in managing personal experience of stress and skills for protecting ones own personal resilience.

Clinical Supervision

I provide supervision via Skype if you are practising in a field where you are working with vulnerable clients. Clinical supervision safeguards clients, nurtures developing practitioners and protects the counselling profession as a whole by ensuring ethical and skilled practice.

My supervision model is flexible and takes into account the context of your work, the client issues you are working with, your theoretical perspective and your level of experience and expertise.

Supervision offers a trusting relationship which can support the development of your professional competencies and confidence and enhance your clinical practice

When counsellors are able to acknowledge and explore their own personal and professional views, beliefs and experiences they may be able to create closer and more authentic connections to the client work; so that their work is reflective and intentional.

I have a Post Graduate qualification in Clinical Supervision - please get in touch if you would like to find out more.
